I have been 6DOFing for over 20 years now, and my first attempts to setup ED with a HOTAS took me 7 hours straight. It took another 12 or so hours to refine the controls - so a total of around 20 before I arrived at the right setup for my 3D Pro and CH pro Throttle. I have every single control in the game mapped to my HOTAS.
LoK. i believe helicopters uses dual sticks rather than HOTAS. i think fighter jets uses HOTAS because they cant do literal movement so dual sticks are pointless. It not only that, with thrust vectoring lateral movement becomes more of a thing in jets as well, but fly by wire seems to take care of a lot of that. #11.

I used duel for a time before switching to joystick and keys. I had my second joystick set up so that forward thust was fire button and backwards was the second fire button. With all lateral thruisters on the stick itself. So pushing the stick up caused the ship to move up vertically.
