18-55mm lens won't focus right. May 6, 2011. Iām having a problem with the 18-55mm kit lens on my XSi. This is a sudden problem, not one that was intermittent. The lens will only focus in one direction. If the camera is set on an object close in and then pointed to an object further away, it will auto focus and take a photo.
I've also never taken off this lens for the 6 years I've had the camera. Recently, I got a Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S lens. After I took off the original 18-55mm lens to attach this new 50mm, the Autofocus stopped working. I checked all of the focusing switches (both the one on the body and the lens) and all are in the correct positions (AF and M/A).
Although there are several variations of Nikon 18-55mm kit lenses, most if not all of them have an AF/MF switch on the lens as well. Have you checked the switch on the lens to see if it has been moved? If the camera menu has AF turned off but the lens switch is set to AF you may not be able to move the focus ring on the lens.

The AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G features the superb optics and advanced technology used on Nikon's high-end lenses. In case the lens is a cheap kit lens like the AF-S DX 18-55, it is likely not worth the trouble to repair, since such a lens can be bought new for about 100 bucks - or you might take the opportunity to upgrade to a better quality lens. If autofocus does not work even with a different lens, there's no easy fix - the problem is almost certainly
