The Vive is $500 and the Rift S is $400. I wouldn't call that "much more expensive" unless you have some regional pricing issues going on. The Vive uses discrete tracking - external hardware that tracks the player and controllers (or more specifically, the devices use the basestations as a point of reference and track themselves).
